The Compost Hub originally began as an idea in our Zero Waste Committee and in La Cosecha Colectiva and came to fruition through our members.
For far too long, trash, both from commercial and residential, has been sent to incinerators, landfills, and transfer stations that have been systemically placed in or near our communities, which are predominantly low-income, Black, Indigenous, People of Color communities.
Members began organizing and discussing practices on how to stop sending our trash to incinerators and landfills. The goal of the Zero Waste Committee was to shut down the Southeast Resource Recovery Facility (SERRF) incinerator located in West Long Beach. Members, in collaboration with Zero Waste USA developed a Zero Waste Plan to address the transition once SERRF shut down in 2023.
At the same time, La Cosecha Collective, our decentralized community garden, hosted monthly meetings, and in this space, members began discussing what a community compost hub can become.
After many conversations, members began organizing volunteer days to construct the bin, and a member offered their home as the site. From door-knocking around the city to tabling at the Huntington Park Farmer’s Market, compost became a resource created by us for us.
Since then, we have cultivated our community by diverting thousands of pounds of food waste that has gone to members’ and community members’ homes and gardens, rather than ending up in a landfill or being burned in an incinerator.
