Youth in Action (YA!) club serves as a space to empower youth and engage them in local environmental health and justice issues they face on the daily. Members learn about local efforts to create a healthier community while developing leadership skills, public speaking skills and facilitation skills.
We also host weekly meetings at our office space for Core Members, which are self-identified youth leaders who engage in deeper dialogue, campaign strategizing and overall organizational direction.
YA! currently exists at Jordan High School, Centennial High School, Cabrillo High School, Garfield High School, Lynwood High School and Bell Gardens High School. The first club started in Bell Gardens High School in 2012, but East Yard had started building youth power and leadership since 2003.
Mono Lake
One of the most powerful engagements we offer youth members is our annual trip to Mono Lake, led by the Mono Lake Committee. We go every summer to bridge access and connection between youth of color and nature and build power, trust and confidence amongst youth.
